Got 10 minutes?
Think you're not racist? Sexist? Bigoted in any shape, way or form?
Or, are you admittedly not really sure?
As a requirement for our Critical Issues in Journalism class, we were sent to this site to take a racism test. I did a couple of others while I was there, and it was definitely worth my time.

Click on the link and when it loads go to demonstration tests. Click on all the agreements and then choose whatever test suits your fancy based upon the descriptions. I recommend taking one of the race related tests.
(I almost never post links to stuff like this, but I genuinely think this is worth 10 minutes of your time. I'm also kind of eager to discuss results in the comments section.)
I came out with a "slight automatic preference for Europeans" but I gotta tell ya -- I think the test is bunk. It's more of a video game than any kind of honest look at the unconscious mind. I found myself pausing to think -- not about my feelings towards a particular race, but where the "GOOD" and "BAD" headings were.
ReplyDeleteAnd, the world is made up of a LOT more people than "African Americans" and "European Americans".
I agree. I don't know if I feel that the tests are entirely accurate. In that particular test, I almost felt that the order of words was arranged to give a preference to European Americans. I'm wondering what the typical results on an African American are. Are they any different?
ReplyDeleteAlso, statistically speaking I do like that it asked for postal codes...in terms of racial relations I grew up in a community of primarily white and native people. This of course, would have a huge impact on my results, I think.
Your Result
ReplyDeleteYour data suggest little to no automatic preference between European American and African American.
this is what i got. and i would say it's entirely accurate. but i did feel the test was slightly rigged to favor european americans.
Apparently I have a slight preference for Old people.
ReplyDeleteI think I did the wrong test.
Either way, I think that the most influencial factor in this test was that I learned the system with the categories in particular places and then had to get used to a whole new layout for part two. I don't think much of this.
I apparently prefer the New York Yankees to the Boston Red Sox.
ReplyDeleteI have little to no automatic preference for European Americans. I am feeling a little smug about not being a racist.
